Investors’ Differential Response to Managed Fund Performance

چکیده

Several studies measuring the flow of monies into and out of U.S. mutual funds note a convexity in the performance-flow relation and offer several explanations for the apparent investor insensitivity to poor performance. In this study investor response to past performance is measured in a different setting: the Australian wholesale funds market. The results confirm that, like the U.S. mutual fund investor, institutional investors in Australia react to recent performance. However, a similar response asymmetry is not detected in most tests. Evidence that small, young funds are potential drivers of the asymmetric response effect is also provided in this study.

Why are some mutual funds closed to new investors?

Fund families typically claim that closing a fund protects the fund’s superior performance by preventing it from growing too large to be managed efficiently. Even though funds with better performance and larger size are more likely to be closed, there is no evidence that closing a fund can indeed protect its performance. Instead, fund closing decisions are more likely to be motivated by spillov...

Mutual Fund Style Analysis: A Stochastic Dominance Approach

It is a well-known fact that actively managed mutual funds on average underperform passive benchmarks. In this paper, we use the stochastic dominance test proposed by Linton, Maasoumi, and Whang (2005) to shed new light on mutual fund performance on average and across styles. This test evaluates mutual fund performance using a non-parametric framework that 1) imposes a minimal set of conditions...

"Does It Pay to Be Informed?" Expenditure Efficiency in the US Mutual Fund Industry

This behavior tends to reduce highIQ investors’ fund fees. Moreover, within each asset class and service category, and controlling for other investor a...

Performance evaluation and self-designated benchmark indexes in the mutual fund industry

Almost one-third of actively managed, diversified U.S. equity mutual funds specify a size and value/growth benchmark index in the fund prospectus that does not match the fund’s actual style. Nevertheless, these ‘‘mismatched’’ benchmarks matter to fund investors. Performance relative to the specified benchmark is a significant determinant of a fund’s subsequent cash inflows, even controlling for...
